Project 03. 3rd stage of PPS modernizations at nuclear Island area of FSUE “Atomflot”
Project 03. 3rd stage of PPS modernizations at nuclear Island area of FSUE “Atomflot”
Project summary

Nordisk Sikkerhet AS worked with FSUE Atomflot, the owner and operator of Russian nuclear-powered icebreakers and special vessels, to improve security at Atomflot's facilities near the city of Murmansk. The project involved upgrading existing physical protection systems (PPS) and installing new PPS at the nuclear-island area of FSUE Atomflot, which included all facilities and equipment for handling nuclear fuel, radioactive waste, and ionizing radiation sources.
A total of 130 new kits/items of PPS equipment were procured and installed within the scope of this project. The Atomflot’s nuclear island plays a pivotal role in the removal of SNF from former military bases at Andreeva Bay and Gremikha, which began to be implemented by the Russian Federation in June 2017 and will continue for several years. It is therefore crucial that an appropriate level of modern PPS is in place in order to ensure that radiological and nuclear materials do not end up in the wrong hands.
